This is a lovely piece of writing David, you captured the warm-crispness of an Australian winter so perfectly.

Hi Melissa

Thank you! I wrote a whole beach load of ocean poetry last Summer, and I hope there will be more on the way - but I do love Winter too…

We need more Australian art and poetry on Substack. Are you an Oz artist/Poet?

Best Wishes - Dave :)

I'm looking forward to reading it! Yes I'm based in Perth! More an artist than a writer though reading poetry like this is inspiring me to getting back into writing my own poetry. At the moment we're in Djilba season here in WA, so cool, crisp days and warm rainy days, it's my favourite season.

I’m the other jigsaw puzzle piece that’s matched Dave for a long time.

I understand your comment entirely as I also am a visual artist rather than a writer! Maybe we could share our current images!? Meg

Oh how fantastic! I've just followed, looking forward to seeing your work!!

Hi Melissa

I’ve mostly posted my images as part of accompanying Dave’s writing (often at the end …)

I’ve just published 3 of my own pieces (?!) and set myself up as “Colour My World” - MegMorrison … if you can find me lol

Otherwise I’ll send as DM.

Hope Perth is behaving for you today!

Good evening from Washington once again! David, I loved this poem. That last long stanza about the mother and child- the swing, thier arms, the connection between them- it just made my heart expand. I reached for my own daughter and gave her little leg a squeeze. You capture beauty in your web of words so tenderly. Thank you. ❤️

Oh!! Welcome home my friend.

And thank you. You just made my day!!! Wow….

Enjoy seeing your family again.

I’m so happy you had your amazing journey!!

Lovely David. Beautiful photos! I especially love the light in the first one.

David Kirkby's avatar

Oh Kristi... Thank you! It was a luminous late afternoon. I could see the light and the shadow and the curve of the trees all coming together perfectly to focus on Meg, with her hair shining in the sun. I could write a whole poem just about that, and maybe I will.... the way I did with a photo I took on a remote beach, late last Summer: https://davidkirkby.substack.com/p/photograph

Best Wishes - Dave :)

You paint a gorgeous scene there David (and I LOVE the way the light & shadows hit in that photograph). Actually more like a mini video. In my mind anyway.

Thank you my friend!

I am a totally amateur photographer but this image does make me happy, and that fact that you enjoyed it doubles my happiness.

One reason I keep posting on Substack is for the fun of creating hybrid works - poetry or prose matched with images. Back when I was publishing traditionally - mainly in small literary journals - it was just plain text. Resurrecting some of that work and illustrating it with photographs has been fun, but creating new work - text and images intended for use in relation to one another - is intensely interesting.

I totally get that.

Beautiful David, I like the idea of my children being my satellites. Or me their sun. I hope you had a safe trip to see your family. Best of luck with the literary competition. Muses are the best. So glad you and Meg and be this for one another. Cheers, Kate

Thanks Kate. Happy pedalling!!!

Thank you my friend. Yes - we had our 6 hour journey South yesterday, down the long coast highway. It's a far easier trip than it used to be. The new highway sacrifices character and interest for speed, so it's also a less interesting journey, but we do the return trip 5 or 6 times a year so "easier" is good.

Have a great weekend! I can tell you that Saturday - so far - is very pleasant here. Sadly, much less so in many other places around the world....

I love the intensity of this poem, Dave, as it focuses on the mother and her children. From a peaceful Swatch of winter, it ends on love and freedom. Beautiful ❤️

David Kirkby's avatar

Thank you dear Naz! Also my apologies - i know you were hoping to have a conversation this week. It’s actually been a crazy week here - but I will send you a message.

Best Wishes - Dave :)

Beautiful. Great Image. Someone asked me once if the Muse was always Feminine….I had no hesitation in saying yes!

David Kirkby's avatar

Ah!

Oh yes….

We live just 5 km from the tiny village of Calliope, which I’m sure also helps :)

Bernadette Geraghty's avatar

Your muse is definitely the voice of beauty and poetry :) But also I’m wondering did you move homes/places of abode….anyhow happy travels. Road trips are fun I reckon!

David Kirkby's avatar

Hi Bernadette

We would love to do that. We are still scheduling some complex family commitments. Not sure right now what’s happening tomorrow. We roll get back to you :)

David Kirkby's avatar

Hi Bernadette

Thank you! No - our primary home is still by the river in beautiful Brushgrove. Calliope is 5 kms away through the cane fields. I cycle that way quite often. We have set up a second place back in Newcastle, to see more of family, but it's currently occupied by eldest Daughter and her family. So -w e have come down for a quick visit - arrived last night. :)

I was thinking of a Calliope further north! Enjoy Newy. And this gorgeous spring weather….we are about tomorrow if you have time for coffee:)
